Cooking with Coconut

Common sense tells me that a picture of a coconut should not be related to anything that’s vital for the game to run, but I’m honestly just kinda confused at this point since there are people saying that some people think this is real.. It all began with a rumor back in 2020, which claimed there was a JPG file of a coconut in TF2’s files and that deleting it caused the game to crash. Considering the mysterious and amusing.

What Is a Coconut?

Deep within the Team Fortress 2 game files, there exists a 256×256 JPG of a highly-detailed coconut, overtop a plain grey background. This image isn’t used anywhere in-game, not as a texture or an item, but deleting it will cause the game to stop working. Any game programmer would know best that code can be a total enigma at times. Even the code that appears the most elegant on its face can.. its located in “Team Fortress 2\tf\tf2_misc_dir >materials\effects” its not actually a .jpg its a .vmt file. you can open it up in vtfedit. not sure about the developer note but since source is a stupid spaghetti code removing something would probably create mess about another thing. seriously why tf there is a coconut.vmt ? That gives me an idea.
