While a darkened room is better for viewing most types of computer displays, it has risks of its own. This is inconsistent with my personal experience: overhead lighting is good, and if positioned so that it doesn’t create glare (not that hard, really), is way superior to a dark room.. Options to help the eyes while working on a computer in a dark room include adjusting the brightness of the screen, increasing the screen contrast, eliminating glare, increasing font size, using a screen application that automatically adjusts the screen according to the light of the room, use a blue light blocker and using a blue light filter.
